Very Pinteresting

Yes, I've been pinning again. I can't help it. There is just so much fun stuff to see on there.

I love these cute little turkeys. I tried to find a pattern but couldn't. I'll have to keep looking.

Fell in love with this crochet jewelry box.

My day yesterday

I had a rough day. Didn't feel good. Didn't get much accomplished. Walked into the end of the broomstick with my jaw while hubby was sweeping. It was rainy and cool most of the day. Just not a good day at all.

Then to top if off, hubby had to work so I had to fix my own meal. So I did what any normal person would do after a day like mine....I took a bubble bath...

and ordered Pizza Hut for supper.

Praying for a better day today.

Tuesday Tips

Just a few little household and cooking tips that I have picked up over the years.

1. Reduce Microwave Splattering

To reduce spatters in the microwave, place a clean coffee filter in the bowl to absorb the splatters. I use this all the time when heating spaghetti, chili, hotdog sauce, etc. Just slide it into your bowl like you would into the coffee pot filter and when you are done, simply throw it away. It doesn't blow off the top of your bowl like napkins will.

2. Grease a cake pan

I do not like the spray oils for greasing a cake pan. It doesn't bake the cake as evenly as greasing your pan with Crisco or other shortening. But yet, I don't like the mess Crisco makes. I bought a small pastry brush that I use just to grease the pans. I dip it in my Crisco shortening and then simply "paint" the bottom and sides of the cake pan. It makes it easy to get in the corners as well.

3.  Removing price stickers from metal or glass

There are actually two ways to do this. On some items, simply holding a hair dryer on it to loosen the adhesive and then pull it off. But sometimes, you still have that gooey residue. I keep a box of Cutex Nail Polish Pads on hand (non-acetone). You wouldn't want to do this on wood or anything that could discolor, but it works wonders on glass products. Simply wipe the nail polish pad across the area and then wash the area and rinse it. No more gooey residue.

4. Dusting in hard to reach corners

I keep a can of spray air (like you use to clean computers) on hand for those hard to reach corners on shelves. Simply aim the wand into the corner and shoot a touch of air. The dust will blow out of the corner onto the shelf where you can wipe it up. This also comes in handy for dusting collectibles that can't be washed.

5. Cleaning costume jewelry.

Some jewelry cleaners are not good on costume jewelry since soaking them can cause a chemical reaction to turn it green. The one thing I have found to keep my costume jewelry sparkling is Prell Shampoo. I keep a toothbrush for just that purpose. Squirt some Prell on the brush (soft bristle) and gently scrub the jewelry. Rinse in cold water for a real shine. Gently dry with a soft cloth.

6. Runny cake or cookie glaze

Do you ever make a glaze with confectioner sugar for your cake or cookies and get it too runny. But you don't have any more confectioners sugar to thicken it up? Simply use some corn starch. The corn starch does not have any flavor and will act like a thickening agent. If you are using any flavoring such as lemon or vanilla or anything, you may have to add a touch more flavoring as the corn starch increases the volume which decreases the power of the flavoring.

7. Cheap Chip Clips

I find that spending money on those chip clips in the chip aisle can be costly. They don't always close tight enough and can snap into very easily. I invested in a bag of the spring loaded clothespins. These are perfect and at the low cost, if one breaks you still have plenty on hand. By the way, I pack a few of these when we go on vacation. We always buy chips and would end up with no way to keep the bag sealed. So now clothespins get packed for every trip.

8. Picking up around the house

I have posted this one before, but it really works. When I clean house, there are always things in rooms where they don't belong. I take an empty clothes basket and start in one end of the house. I walk through every room and do a "once over" and simply pick up things that don't belong and put them in the basket. When I get to the end of the house, I start cleaning. I go through the basket in each room as I clean and put things back where they belong. By the time I get back to the other end of the house, every room is clean and everything is where it belongs.

9. Unloading the Dishwasher

Some of you probably already do this, but it bears repeating. When I unload the dishwasher, I stack everything that belongs together into stacks on the counter. Then, I shut the dishwasher and simply carry each stack where it belongs. Putting up a stack of plates one time beats putting up individual plates 6 or 7 times.

10. Clean and fresh Laundry

My husband has severe dry skin so a lot of laundry detergents break him out. We have switched and tried many different ones. Finally, we found that any that are called Free and Clear don't seem to bother him. But then we just have laundry that smells free and clear. I miss that fresh smell of other detergents. I have found that if I put a scoop of Arm and Hammer Powder Detergent. It helps neutralize in lingering odors and gives an extra boost to the laundry.

I have got to get a camera...

I need a new camera. Well, really, I need a camera ... period. I don't have one. Something happened to mine several months ago and I have never replaced it. I use my phone for all my photos, but when you go to a family gathering with no camera you feel bereft. My daughter took pics yesterday, but I have to get them from her to see if find some to post of the party. I want one of those compact ones that you can just drop in your purse to take everywhere you go. I really like the looks of this one, but not sure how big it is.

I did get a couple of pics on my phone yesterday but one was too blurry and the other one was a look that even scared a grandmother so I guess I will wait and see what my daughter got.

In the meantime, I was thrilled to pieces over a couple of things that happened this weekend. First off, I was driving down the road the other day and saw one of those little roadside flea markets with four or five booths. I decided to pull off the road just to take a quick peek.

The first booth (do you call them booths if they are on the side of the road?) I walked up to had a set of Hazel Atlas Vintage 1950's White and Turquoise Coffee Cups. I have loved this pattern for a long time, but I have never in all my exploring of thrift and antique stores found anything by Hazel Atlas. Imagine my excitement at finding the set for just $3.00 total. I am beyond thrilled with them.

I was so excited about these that I was over my moodiness at not finding any Pyrex lately. I haven't had time to go looking. I had planned on it Saturday, but the day got away from me. I was getting moody because I couldn't remember the last time I found me some new Pyrex.

Well, one of my sweet friends from West Virginia popped down for a visit to the mountains this weekend and came to church Sunday morning. She told me she had me a little gift in the car. We walked out to get it and my oh my! was I thrilled.

First off, was a small Cinderella bowl in the Spring Blossom Crazy Dazy Pattern. I have some bowls in this pattern and was looking for more to add.

The next item was the Colonial Mist bowl. This is the pattern I had years ago that we got rid of...way before I started collecting Pyrex. I have been looking everywhere for something in this pattern. This is now my favorite Pyrex bowl I own.

If you will recall I am trying to get all the bowls in the primary color set. I had the yellow already since Hubby had it when we got married. Then my niece found me the red. Now my dear friend has presented me with the blue. That just leaves the green one and my set will be complete. And so far, all my pieces have been free. You gotta love it.

So all-in-all it was a fantastic weekend for vintage finds for somebody that never got a chance to go look for anything.

Plans for the day

I was in charge of crafts and dessert for Pre-K Sunday School today. I went to Hobby Lobby and Walmart to get some ideas. I ended up with brown pipe cleaners, sparkly leaves and ribbon.

They love using glue dots so I thought they could take these supplies and make a little fall wreath. I had to try one first so I could make sure it would work.

I picked up Angel and Mr. Crow at Walmart for .97 cents each. We are going to be studying Zacchaeus and the tree for the next few weeks. I thought they could be used as puppets for a little puppet show about why he climbed up in the tree. Wrote a little script for it and just have to run it by the Teacher to make sure it is okay. She is so much fun to work beside that I'm sure she will love it.

For snacks, I decided to go simple with the new Halloween Oreos and some Goldfish. That way we have some orange for the Harvest colors in snack time as well. I bought the Oreos yesterday and then last night I saw the new Oreo ad in my Family Circle magazine. Whoever came up with this ad has a brilliant marketing mind. No words, just this picture and at the bottom of the page it had the Oreo logo. I just loved this.

Staying with my orange theme, I made Hubby an orange pound cake with orange glaze yesterday. Oh my goodness! It was a Duncan Hines Orange Supreme cake mix. All you do is take the regular cake mix and reduce the water to 1 cup instead of what the box calls for and add one more egg than the box calls for. The bake it for 40-50 minutes at 350 degrees. To give it more zing, I put the grated rind of one orange in the mix. The glaze is confectioner's sugar and more grated rind with the juice from the oranges. You just use enough juice to get it the consistency you want. We like it to stick to the cake so I don't make it too runny. I poked holes in the cake so it leaks down in it some to make it a moister cake.

Today is Alexis's actual birthday party. I'll be heading over to my son's house after church.

He is going to grill hamburgers and hotdogs. Call me crazy but all I have thought about for the last two days is getting a grilled hotdog today. My hubby loves to grill but he rarely eats hotdogs any more and when he does, we hate to fire up the grill just for two hotdogs. One of my favorite foods is a grilled hotdog with mustard. Nothing else. Just hotdog and mustard. I can't wait for lunch.

I hope to get tons of pics of the grandkids today. Could I be so lucky to get one really good one of all 5 together with none of them being distracted. A grandmother can always hope.

Wrapping up the week

It's been a busy week. I ran some errands earlier in the week and the morning sky was beautiful.

I ended up in Jefferson City one day so I went ahead and picked up the Pyrex Vintage plate that I've had my eye on. It was just $2.00. I should have bought more, but hubby decided he didn't like them as much as the plate he uses now. So I just got one for me for those times when he's at work and I'm eating alone.

I had to get gas one day and stopped at a gas station I had never been in. For weeks, I have been craving sour hard candy but couldn't find any. In the gas station, I found these. They were all the rage when I was in school in the late 60's, early 70's. They are an oval shape hard candy that is filled with fizzy sour stuff. They are so awesome. I haven't had them in years. They even beat Lemon Heads for sourness.

I stopped in Staples to pick up a notebook. I can never just "stop in Staples." I have to checkout and see what they have. I found a whole new section of new Avery products that are really neat.

They have these cute gift bags....

...containers and boxes....

...and gift jars.

Then they have a whole new line of labels to decorate the jars, boxes, tins and bags.

Great ideas for gifting baked goods during the holidays. I'll have to remember these.

We had our weekly visit with Roger at Double R Farms. He had just gotten in some fresh garlic.

Thirty-One shipped my Timeless Memory Pouches and they arrived this week. They are a lightweight polyester with a draw string. The big one is about 13" x 15" and the little one is about 6" x 7". They come two to a set for just $5.00 for the set. Not a bad deal. Stop by my other blog at Visits with Bee and leave a comment for a chance to win a set of these. These are in the new patterns Organic Poppy and Black Pick Me Plaid.

And this is the Say it Taupe and the Patchwork Paisley.

Yesterday was a fantastic day. I picked up Alexis after school for her birthday shopping and birthday dinner with me. We had a blast. She chose Applebee's which is where she and I love to eat. As we sat there talking, I couldn't help but admire what a beautiful little 8 year old was sitting there with me.

She picked chicken tenders and fries for her meal and shared some of my potato skins. Of course, being a true born and bred southern gal, she told the waitress she wanted sweet tea for her drink. She loves her sweet tea.

She had told the waitress it was her birthday and toward the end of the meal the wait staff all appeared at our table singing happy birthday and presenting her with a free Sundae, which I might add she scooped up every bite of. A grandmotherly lady setting behind us came over and gave Alexis a hug and told her Happy Birthday and gave her $2.00. It was so sweet. There are still good people in this world.

We went and did some shopping afterwards to get her birthday presents from me and Papaw. She knew exactly what she wanted. I have to get it wrapped up today so I can take it to her birthday party tomorrow. I found myself this sweater yesterday. I just love it. Argyle has always been one of my favorite patterns. I can't wait to wear it.

I've got a busy weekend. A little bit of shopping to do today and then this afternoon I am going to turn my kitchen from spring to autumn. Hubby wants me to bake him an orange pound cake with orange glaze so I'll be sharing that recipe one day next week with you. After that I'm going to clean out one of my closets and move rearrange my craft/office room .... again. One of these days I will get it the way I want it. I have to wrap Alexis's presents for her party tomorrow. Tomorrow will be church in the morning and her birthday party in the afternoon. Sounds like it might be Pizza Hut delivery for supper tonight with so much to do.

Have an amazing weekend.

A very special day for a very special girl

Today my oldest granddaughter, Alexis Caroline, turns 8 years old. It is so hard to believe that 8 years have come and gone.

Eight years of hugs, eight years of kisses and eight years of the sweetest love a grandchild can bring.

She is small for 8 years old, but she got off to a rocky start. Weighing less than 2 pounds and being about a foot long, she was born two months early, but was on oxygen for less than 24 hours.

No one knew that in just two short months, she would be coming home at a little over 4 pounds. Healthy, happy and tiny as could be. Papaw and his princess.

Papaw and his Princess earlier this year with her little brother, Colby.

Our Princess with her big brother Garret.

She is one big bundle of smiles and giggles. If you are ever feeling down, you can depend on Alexis to cheer you up. She holds my heart in her hands. That smile of hers is enough to make you melt.

I remember one time when I was writing my blog, she was about 6 at the time. I was making a blog about The Rules at Grandma's house. She was at my house and I asked her and Garret for some rules to put on my blog. She summed it up by saying "I know the number 1 rule." When I asked her what it was, she simply turned on that smile, threw her hands up in the air and said "There are no rules!" Guess that about says it all.

She is one of the smallest in her class as you can tell by the picture. She is in the black and white dress.

But to be so tiny, she has such a big heart and it is so full of joy, happiness and love that you can't help but fall in love with her.

She's Mamaw's darling and I hope she has a very happy birthday today. I get the honor of picking her up this afternoon for some Mamaw time. We will go eat at her place of choice and do some birthday shopping. She is celebrating everyday of the weekend, ending with her party on Sunday. I am sure she has all her plans made.

Happy birthday, Alexis Caroline. Me and Papaw love you.
