No-Sew RunnersTutorial

I love making no-sew runners. My niece Amy showed me this neat trick last year and I have making them ever since. I like to make the smaller versions so I'm not sure if you would call them runners or  doilies but either way, they are super simple. I thought I would write the steps out for anyone who wants to give it a whirl. You will need material, scissors, iron and a roll of hem tape (otherwise known as heat & bond). I recommend you do not use your best iron unless you use a dish towel to lay over each step when you iron. Otherwise, you could get the hem tape stuck on the iron. I bought a cheap iron for $6.00 at Walmart as my craft iron. It works perfectly.

First, select a piece of fabric and determine the finish size you want. Add about 1-2 inches on each side to have enough for your finish size. I cut this piece of material at 10 x 14. Your edges don't need to be perfect because you will be turning them under.

Press your material to remove any wrinkles then turn it with the front side face down. Fold in each side about 1-2 inches and press the fold down on every side.

Your back side should now look like this.

Now you will lift each side one at a time and measure out your hem tape. I love this stuff because you can just tear it off when you get the length you need.

Lay the piece of hem tape inside the fold.

Fold the fabric back over the tape, hiding it inside the fold.

Set you iron in the middle of the cotton/linen setting on your switch. Due one side of your fabric at a time. Cover the side you are ironing with a soft cloth or dish towel to avoid getting the tape on the iron. Hold it down on sections at a time for 10 seconds. DO NOT run the iron up and down the seam. Simply hold it over a section, count to 10 and move to the next section and repeat until you do the entire side of the fabric.

Repeat this process on all four sides of your fabric.

When you are done, your back should look something like this.

Next, turn your material so the short width is facing you. Bend the corners in to a triangle shape that makes the fabric come to a point on the end.

Iron it in place to create a seam.

Open up each side and place tape on each side of the turned in pieces.

Then gently lay the fabric back down to cover the hem tape.

Hold your iron on each section for 10 seconds, sealing the seams. Repeat on the other end.

If you want, you can use hot glue to put a button or a bow on each of the pointed ends.

And here is the finished product.

You can place a candle, a candy dish, a figurine, anything you want. I made this one for my Russian stacking doll and a candy dish.

This looks like a lot of steps, but it really only takes about 15-30 minutes to make one. The more comfortable you get, the faster you can do them. I can do one in about 12 minutes. Here are a few others I have made this year and last year. I have a vintage reindeer set I may set on this one.

This is the one for my pencil Santa's to set on.

I made this one last year to set a big snowman on.

I love poinsettias. It is my birth month flower and my mom & mamaw always set out poinsettias every Christmas. So I had to make this when I spotted the material.

Last year, I used it for a little mini poinsettia plant and my Christmas tea for one set. I just loved how it turned out.

But the one I made the other day is my favorite. You can't really tell but the material has glitter built in. It sparkles so pretty. I am going to set a candy dish full of Christmas hard candy on this one beside a little votive candle.

I am making some for gifts this year. I have 3 made and have about 10-12 more to make. I will probably make them tonight and tomorrow night so they are done and can get marked off my list. I have a lot of material to choose from. My friend does applique work and she gave me a bunch of material this year.

As you can see, I will have a lot of variety for my gift runners.

Happy birthday, Jamie

I want to take a moment to wish my daughter-in-law, Jamie, a very happy birthday. We are so blessed to have you as part of the family. You are a wonderful wife to my son and mother to my grandchildren. Me and Allen hope you have a great birthday.

Weekend Wrap Up

The UPS man came calling on Friday. He brought me a big box of happiness for my customers, but I actually earned some freebies this time.

I got the billfold to match the Mini Cindy purse I had earned earlier in the fall. I am in love with this matching set.

I also got the cute little Chevron Little Carry All Caddy. I am going to put tags, tape and scissors in it for my Christmas wrapping sessions.

I am in love with the snowman medium utility tote. This is the special through the end of November. Spend $35 in Thirty-One products and get this for just $7.00. That's an awesome deal.

I ordered me a large zipper pouch in gray parisian pop and had it personalized with Places to go. This is where I want to keep any coupon, shopping lists, ads, etc. That way I can just grab it and go when I am ready to go shopping.

We had our spring premier for Thirty-One yesterday. It was fabulous. Lots of new surprises come January. Just for attending we got the zip top organizing utility tote - one of my personal favorites - in one of the awesome new patterns.

I wanted a new cup for the holidays. I was at Target and saw this adorable little vintage looking cup. I just couldn't resist.

Bring on the hot chocolate. I am ready now. I love hot chocolate with candy cane shred up in it. It's delicious. I just use a nutmeg grinder to get it really fine and then use another candy cane as my stirring spoon. Best peppermint hot chocolate ever.

I started on some homemade Christmas gifts last night. Can't tell yet because the recipients read my blog. Have a great week!

A date day...

Hubby and I are having a date day today. Lots of fun plans and some good food will fall in there somewhere because it has been forever since we have been out to eat together.

The first thing on our list is to visit the 3rd Annual One Stop Christmas Shopping in Sevierville, TN.

There will be Thirty-One, Pampered Chef, Origami Owl and lots of local craft and specialty stores. Here are some of the things I have seen on the Facebook Event page promoting this. I can't wait to go see what all they have.

And the great thing about it is that a portion of all sales will go to the Ronald McDonald House in Knoxville.

Getting excited....

It's that time to start planning our Thanksgiving dinner. I am a fanatical list maker for everything. Well, that is even true of planning Thanksgiving dinner. I have an Excel form that I use. I list every item that we are having in the first column. Then in the next column, I breakdown each item by a list of ingredients needed to make that item. Then, I sort it and use the remove duplicates function to let the computer remove any thing I listed twice. Once that is done, I have my list of ingredients. The next step is to print that and go to the kitchen and see what we have and what we need (we stock some things all year so I "shop" my stock first. Then I go back to my list and remove any items we already have. The final step is that I visual the aisles of our favorite grocery store and beside each item I put the aisle number it is in. Then I sort the list by aisle numbers, remove the number and the remain items is a shopping list in order of their location in the store. The whole process only takes about 20-30 minutes. But when you think about how much time you go back and forth in the store because you forgot something, it is well worth the prep time.

I spend yesterday evening rearranging cabinets so we can start stocking up on non-perishables that we need. I love my big old pantry. You can stock stuff high and deep.

In another Pantry I have a head start on baked goods for the winter season. The chocolate cake and Confectioner's sugar are for a cake for the grandkids on Thanksgiving.

I will get to use my Town & Country divided dish for the first time. I am excited about that. I put TGIF Baked Potato Skin Chips in one side and a queso cheese dip in the other side as an appetizer that I set on the coffee table in the living room.

Hubby is off on Saturday for the first time in months and months (other than vacation). We are going to do a little Christmas shopping then go to the grocery store...armed with THE LIST. I can't wait.

What's going on around here....

I have been working on organizing my book shelf in my home office. I use that room for my Thirty-One business as well as for my craft room. After work yesterday, I finished up the last of it. I still have all my collectible and mementos that mean a lot to me and I incorporated some baskets and trays to hold all my Thirty-One items that I need to keep close at hand.

The other shelf contains some of my most important memories. I found some cute containers at Family Dollar so I now have some craft supplies at my finger tips without having to dig in the closet.

Then I decided to do some crafting. I saw a cute Jingle Bell project on Pinterest.

I printed out the words on scrapbook paper, but a friend said you can buy peel off letters at Walmart. Trying that on my next one.

Then I layers some jingle bells inside the shadowbox frame.

Next, I glued ribbon around the frame and tied it in a bow on top.

And here is the finished product.

My next project was scrapbook paper, a magnet, rafia, string, printed subway art and a clothespin.

These make great refrigerator magnets. The middle one is actually ribbon but the orange ones are scrapbook paper.

I am so glad I have gotten started on my crafting.
