Cystic Fibrosis & My Friend

It is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month so I wanted to do my part to help raise awareness.

What is it? Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and progressively limits the ability to breathe. People with cystic fibrosis are at greater risk of getting lung infections because thick, sticky mucus builds up in their lungs, allowing germs to thrive and multiply. Lung infections, caused mostly by bacteria, are a serious and chronic problem for many people living with the disease. Minimizing contact with germs is a top concern for people with CF.

If you see someone who has CF you may never know it. On the surface, they may look fine and may seem like they don't have a care in the world. But at home, they may have to hook themselves up to IV's and take breathing treatments. They may have a multitude of pills they have to take for various side effects of CF. They may have to monitor things like their oxygen level, there sugar, their heart rate. All things that take up a part of their day and keep them alive. All things that is just routine to them would terrify us to live with that every day of our life. But someone with CF will do these things and then get up and head out and live an otherwise normal life.

Let me introduce you to my dear friend, Stephanie. She is just 29 years old and has been afflicted with CF her whole life. She is one of the sweetest, strongest gals I know. Not to mention she's a beautiful young lady.

She endures whatever God sends her way and continues to praise him for the good days and trusts in Him to get her through the bad ones.

Every time I hear people complain about allergies, sinuses and colds and say they can't breathe and can't wait for it to be gone (myself included), I think of my dear friend who struggles with breathing issues daily. She is continually having to take breathing treatments. But she never complains. She just states the facts when you ask how she is and ends with a proclamation of her faith that God will get her through it.

What for us would be a small cold which is gone in a few days, can send Stephanie to the ER and have her admitted and hooked up to oxygen, IV's, and around the clock meds. When she is finally released, she has to come home on IV's and oxygen. She has to continually check her oxygen levels in addition to many other daily things she has to keep tabs on for her health. All this from a cold.

She recently had a bad bout of the flu and pneumonia which is a double whammy for someone with CF. Each time she has to go back to the hospital, it takes a little longer for her to bounce back.

But yet she continues daily to lead as normal of a life as she can. If it means wearing her oxygen tank 24/7, then she does. If it means not hugging anyone at church or shaking hands, she asks others to respect that she can't. She has always worked in Children's Church and VBS. She has a wonderful compassion for kids. But this recent set back has left her with strict instructions to not volunteer in those areas or go on school field trips till she "levels out" because as much as we all love little children, they are a hot bed of colds, strep throat and flu. Things that can bring her to her knees and weaken her even more each time she contracts a new virus.

I watch her struggle on a regular basis just to do the things we all do without even thinking ... and that is breathing. My heart breaks when she gets so sick and I worry so much about her. But on the flip side I admire the strength that this beautiful girl has about her. They had recommended she not have children, but that was her one wish in life. Her little Lilly is a joy and the light of Stephanie's life. I do believe that love is what keeps her going, what provides her with a will to beat the odds. She has a strong sense of God and family.

CF has come a long way in techniques and treatments. Years ago, a CF child rarely lived to their teens. Some CF's are now living into their 40's and 50's and a few even into their 60's. My prayer is that they find a cure or a better treatment that will prolong that even more. If you are given a chance to make a donation to CF this month, please drop in your pennies and help them explore for a cure.

And say a prayer for my dear friend and others who suffer from CF when you can.

(Steph & Lilly)

I love you Stephanie and keep you in my prayers continually.

Very Pinteresting...

I needed a break this morning so I did what I enjoy doing...went to Pinterest for ideas.

One of the first things that popped up was a bunch of Bullet Journal ideas. Now I don't know about the rest of you but all these different types of journals confuse me. I think they are basically to do lists on various dates. In my day, we called it a calendar. I've got that under control. What I would like instead of how to journal is how to write as neat as these people who show these journals.

Bullet Journal Monthly Spread alternative:

I have several cutting boards and lots of cookie sheets and cooling trays. I love this idea.

Really, really love these rack shelves for storing cutting boards, trays, and racks.:

Command Hooks and wire baskets are a good idea for organizing under the sink.

Make all that under-the-sink space work for you with the help of Command hooks and a little basket.:

Love the little tension rods to hang stuff on.

Use a tension shower curtain rod (only $8!) under the sink for hanging bottles of cleaner. This blog has other great kitchen organizing tips!:

For some reason cabinets under kitchen sinks are always BLAH. But I saw an idea where one lady spruced hers up with contact paper. Too cute.

Another lady purchased some peel off linoleum squares to put on the bottom of her sink. Love this idea.

Looks like they used a big metal tray.

Well, I got some good ideas today.

Another day...

I am downsizing and decluttering my life. I am moving to a small home and getting rid of things I don't need. How in the world did I accumulate so much stuff. As I was packing to move yesterday, my daughter was helping. She summed it up best by saying "Mother, you sure have a lot of crap." As I looked around at all the boxes so far and realize we are only about 1/3 of the way done, I decided I agree.

Nobody needs this much stuff. Why do I need two desks and two desk chairs. Yes they were great when hubby was still alive and I was working from home a lot. But now? Not so much.

Why do I need an oak craft table when I do 99% of my crafting on a folding table so I don't get glue or anything on the oak table. (Which by the way, I bought at a yard sale for the sole purpose of crafting on it.)

Let's face it. I just have way to much stuff.

I went to the new place last nice and measured and designed where the furniture will go in each room. I was so thrilled to see that all my favorite pieces are going to be able to fit quite well and the things that don't fit, I will gladly part with because they actually are rarely used.

So, anyway, my goal is to get all packed up and move this weekend. I don't want to live out of boxes for much longer than a few days.

A little sentimental today.....

Oh how I miss that smile. He was my life. I miss him so much.

I love this song. It popped up on my Facebook memories today and set off this string of memories. Most days I do really good. I strive to be strong. I am making changes. Making adjustments. But every once in awhile something triggers the tears.

Happy anniversary

Happy anniversary to my son and daughter-in-law. May you have many more.

My memories from today....

Do you ever click on your Facebook Memories to see what happened on this day in your past Facebook years?

Well, today my plans are to clean house and get it finally straightened back up from my busy past three weeks. I should be done by noon. Then I'm taking the grandkids to the local playground/park in Kodak for a picnic and to let them play. After that, when we are going to come back and make brownies and I am going to make a lemon pound cake. I am really energized and motivated today to get things done. But first, I always check my Facebook. In light of my plans for today, I found it extremely hilarious that these were my first two memories...

Apparently, I was not as motivated on April 30th in years past. The next things that I found funny was that the rest of my memories were about baking on a day I had planned to do some baking. First was something I experimented with. I cut Crescent rolls in to wide strips and rolled them up, baked them and then coated them in cinnamon sugar. They were delicious. May try to do that again soon.

These were some type of apple cinnamon churro bites that was a recipe I saw online.

And I was intrigued by these little muffins so I ended up making these but just in cinnamon sugar and I made a batch of some in lemon supreme.

A french toast bake that hubby shared with me but we never did get around to trying it.

One of these days I am going to go back and try this caramel pound cake.

The lemon pound cake is what I am making later today, but my glaze won't be that thick. I just like a thin glaze all over.

There were two more things I liked in my memories and it was this vacation poster. This is so me. I take several books to the beach with me because there is absolutely positively nothing in the world as relaxing as sitting on the beach and reading a book. I get lost in my book and get sunburned every time, but it is so restful.

Well, those were my memories for the day. Now I'm ready to make some more memories. Have a great day.
